Wash project 2021-2024

Unsafe water and poor sanitation are some of the largest barriers to eradicating extreme poverty.

Most of us take for granted that wherever we may live in New Zealand, there will be safe drinking water piped into our homes and a separate sewer system to take waste water away. We don’t expect to get sick from drinking the water, or have to walk many miles every day to fetch enough water for the family to use.

This is not the case for many people; in fact around the world 844 million people don’t have access to clean water.

Where our team are working in Buikwe, Uganda, 33%  the population still do not have access to clean water and nearly 40% of families do not have access to clean sanitary facilities.

During 2018 – 2020 International Needs successfully brought clean water and sanitation to 12 villages in Buikwe.  This could not have been accomplished without the support of you, our generous supporters. Thank you for making this possible.  12,020 people are now benefiting from clean water and improved hygiene and sanitation. With local ownership and leadership at the heart of the way we work, we have seen communities mobilised to generate long-term change.

Now the process has begun to see another 15 villages in Buikwe & Kiyindi transformed with clean water and sanitation facilities.  At a cost of $63,000 per village, we have agreed to support 2 of these villages, Bbanga 2 & Kokola, and this is where we need you!

By supporting the Uganda WASH programme, you will help the families in these villages get better access to clean water, toilets, hand washing facilities and more. At the heart of our programme is empowering community leadership through working closely with local leaders, families, and schools to champion this change for their villages.

By the end of August 2024, International Needs will have helped another 15 villages to transform their access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.   Already we have been working with these villages to map out their needs, set up Water Committees, repair some broken water points, train community members in good hygiene and to build some toilets.

Can you help us raise $126,000 to support 2 villages in Uganda have clean water and sanitation facilities?  This will transform the lives of over 500 families!
