Huzaifa’s Story: A Miracle Made Possible

In 2023, we learned that one of our sponsored children in Uganda, Huzaifa, was suffering from a large hematoma that had grown over his face, covering his eyes and affecting his ability to see. The surgery required to remove it was urgent — and costly — with an estimated price of $10,000 NZD.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of sponsors here in New Zealand, the full amount was raised in just 48 hours. It was an overwhelming response, and a powerful answer to prayer.

Huzaifa underwent major surgery lasting more than ten hours. The outcome was nothing short of life-changing — he can see again. After the surgery, his father shared a deeply moving reflection:
“I can now see my own likeness in my son.”

During our recent Kenya–Uganda Discovery Trip, we had the privilege of meeting Huzaifa and his parents in person. Seeing him smiling, healthy, and full of hope was an emotional and unforgettable moment. His parents expressed their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who played a part in making this miracle possible.

In these photos, you’ll see Huzaifa with his mum and dad, and a beautiful exchange of gifts — with our Executive Director Stephen giving and receiving gifts on behalf of Huzaifa’s New Zealand sponsor and their family. It was a powerful reminder of the connection sponsorship creates across nations.

Following his surgery, Huzaifa also received a medical assessment to determine whether specialised glasses would help support his vision. The doctor noted that because his eyes differ in size, corrective treatment is more complex, and specialised glasses would not be suitable at this stage. Instead, Huzaifa can use a light cloth to cover his eyes when needed to help manage discomfort.

Huzaifa has also taken a new direction for his future. While he had previously hoped to study motor vehicle mechanics, he recently chose to begin working and is now employed as a painter in Kampala.

We are grateful to see Huzaifa continuing to move forward after such a significant medical journey. His story remains a powerful reminder of how compassion and generosity can bring life-changing support when it is needed most.
