Nurturing Faith and Character Through Transformative Bible Clubs in Kenya’s Korogocho Slum
For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.
1 Corinthians 3:9
The Project
Korogocho, Nairobi’s fourth largest slum, is marked by overcrowding, poor sanitation, unsafe water, and limited access to education and healthcare. Bordering the city’s largest dumpsite, it is a place where children face constant risks—drug abuse, crime, neglect, abuse, and emotional struggles like trauma, anxiety, and low self-esteem. These pressures often lead to poor school performance, harmful behaviour, and difficulty building healthy relationships.
The Kenya Bible Clubs Project, led by International Needs Kenya (INKE) with support from International Needs New Zealand (INNZ) and International Needs United Kingdom (INUK), seeks to change that reality. Meeting children where they are, the clubs offer hope, love, and moral guidance grounded in Christian teaching. Before launching, INKE met with parents and guardians, whose enthusiastic support affirmed their desire for children to grow up with strong values. These clubs now provide a consistent, safe space where children can grow in faith, build confidence, and experience care and belonging each week.
“Together, we are sowing seeds of hope in Korogocho—seeds that will one day grow into leaders, change-makers, and ambassadors of the Gospel.” — Jocelyn Muraya, INKE Executive Director
Objectives
- Spiritual Growth: Foster deeper understanding of the Bible, prayer, and Christian living.
- Moral & Character Development: Instill values like kindness, forgiveness, honesty, and love.
- Community Engagement: Create safe, faith-filled spaces where children belong and can serve others.
- Creative Learning: Use interactive methods (skits, songs, crafts) to strengthen faith and creativity.
- Nutritious Meals: Provide healthy food to support children’s physical growth and wellbeing.
The Bible Clubs meet every Saturday, when children are free from school. Sessions include Bible stories with practical life lessons, prayer and devotion, memory verse challenges, and joyful songs and worship. Children also enjoy arts, crafts, games, and skits that reinforce Christian values, while a feeding program provides morning porridge and a nutritious lunch to support their wellbeing.
At the same time, the program invests in volunteer leaders by equipping them with training in child development, trauma awareness, and positive, non-violent discipline. Leaders also learn to create safe, inclusive learning spaces, use engaging biblical teaching methods such as storytelling and drama, recognise and respond to abuse, and support children’s mental health and resilience.
Impact
Each week, more than 75 children attend Bible Clubs in Korogocho, participating in safe, structured activities that support their spiritual, emotional, and social development.
Over 80 children have received health and hygiene training, helping improve wellbeing in a challenging environment near the local dumpsite. Children are showing consistent attendance, positive behavioural change, and growing confidence.
The programme is also strengthening local leadership, with community teachers trained in child development, trauma awareness, and classroom management, ensuring the clubs remain safe, supportive, and sustainable.
To keep the Bible Clubs running, the project requires approximately NZD 30,000 each year. Your support will provide trained leaders, learning materials, Bibles, and activity supplies, as well as nourishing food and safe spaces for children to gather and grow.
Messi’s Story of Growing Confidence
Messi is a young boy growing up in Korogocho, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, where children often face poverty, instability, and limited opportunities. When he first began attending the Bible Club, Messi was very quiet and kept to himself, preferring art activities over joining in group games.
During Scripture Arts sessions, teachers noticed the creativity and care in his drawings. With encouragement and access to art supplies, Messi began developing his skills, creating artwork inspired by the Bible lessons he was learning each week.
As his confidence grew, so did his participation. Messi began sharing his work with others and now actively engages in Bible study, devotions, and group activities. He also enjoys helping younger children during art time.
Through the Bible Club, Messi has discovered his gifts, built confidence, and found a place where he belongs.
Donate today to bring hope and faith to children through the Kenya Bible Clubs.
Our goal is to raise NZD 30,000 annually to sustain and grow the Kenya Bible Clubs. Your support will train leaders, provide learning materials and meals, and give children a safe place to grow in faith, character, and hope.
